Glen,

When I said I don't have your number I meant I didn't keep it. After we met with your CEO and he blew us off entirely, I hit delete.

Chris,

Just call the main number (206) 254-3000 and you can get to me through reception or the auto directory.

You should have my biz card with my direct and mobile I thought I gave you one at NAB in the Microsoft booth when I was demoing our Silverlight solution.

It is highly possible there was a glitch. We have two data centers that host our web site. If the propagation process is down it is possible that for one period of time the website you connected to housed the older copy.

Anyway it is real and only the first of news you will here about Widevine on the iPhone.

Cheers,

Glenn,

Please check the updates on the posting. There was a period of several hours where the release was not on your site and the links in the release did not work. Obviously that changed.

I don't have your number.

I like a conspiracy theory as much as the next person... because I work with these pieces of "secret software" does it mean I should have my own secret lair under a volcano somewhere in the Pacific? Where's the requisition form for that?

Meantime, I guess we'll all have to put up with form-letter rants from the open source guys just so we can continue to provide content to the other 98% of our audiences...

Actually, I haven't read any other reports of this theft that mentioned anything about DRM. Is there a better link with more information?

This was clearly hardware theft. If someone is out to steal Peter Gabriel music there are easier ways to do that.

Patent trolls, as the name has evolved, usually refers to companies that accumulate patents for the purpose of pursuing litigation...that being their only business model. In most cases, these companies had nothing to do with the invention itself. In the case of Digital Reg of Texas, the owners are part of the original team that invented the technologies back in 1998. Their company won "Best New Company" at InternetWorld 1998 and was one of the very first to sell music and books on the Internet, on themusicrack.com, and the bookrack.com. Although this suit is based on just one patent, the parent of Digital Reg, DRM Technologies, Inc. and its operating corporation, DigitalContainers, Inc. has a portfolio of granted patents that cover a range of technologies that allow for content to be downloaded directly from search results and online advertising, and then be passed around, with perpetual rights management and monetization. As a pioneering company in DRM, and with the patents and awards to prove it, we do not believe we are in the patent troll category. As to why we are not including Intertrust in the action, it is because in the late 90's we and Intertrust were among the only companies developing DRM technologies, and we were very aware of each other. Our way of doing it was highly differentiated from their's, and our patents cite their work extensively. The patent office agreed that there was no overlap between Intertrust and us.

In this case since we are talking about a limited time period event, the NBA Finals, I think this download to own model is very appropriate. Per game they will net close to $2.00 after servicing their processing fees, DRM and CDN.

For a regular season this would do well as a standard subscription and I predict the NBA will do just that next year.

They also offer the full series and your favorite series which would appear to be a great deal.

They might want to consider offering this as a streaming product as well for people that don't like the 3 seat limitation.

Do you feel that the customer base prefers the "pay-per-view" model over other options in this situation? What other types of business cases seem to work well in this format and how does that affect the price to the end consumer?

Cheers,

Chris
